To All Portland Boot Camp Women: Never, Never, Never, Never Give Up

2007 & 2008 came and went. Did you give up? 2009 is still going… and every passing moment is a chance to turn it all around…

With rain stinging our hands and faces, we scaled a dormant volcano at Mt. Tabor last Wednesday.

3 miles, a couple hundred stairs, and a sprint to the top.

We reached the caldera and I was overwhelmed with the tenacity of my boot camp superstars.

While catching my breath, I said,

“You know… people who try to get in shape… who lose fat and gain it all back…who are laying in bed right now saying they will start moving ‘some day soon’… those who enviously attack successful types… those who sit around wishing for a new body to magically appear… they all believe people like us have some special quality.  Some kind of mojo that sets us apart. They actually believe that we something built-in at birth that they lack.

Well they are right.

And they are also wrong.

They are right: we do have something they lack.  But they are wrong because it isn’t something built in at birth.

It’s something they can have NOW…at any moment.

The magic power we have isn’t glamorous — or really magic at all. It would be easy to dismiss it as too simple to be true.

But it is.

It is simply: persistence.

The power to drive toward a goal relentlessly, even with setbacks and temporary failures, sets you apart.

So I applaud you.

That’s as plain as it gets.

Sure you have to have a clear goal.  Sure you have to have a proven plan.  And of course, you may need some guidance or education.

But the “secret sauce”… the thing that makes it all work  is plain old persistence.

The greatest contributors to humanity have all failed repeatedly… but they never gave up.

And I know you will never give up either.   Because you have the same power they do.  And that’s what sets you apart.

Cheers,

D

Boot Camp Workout Soreness Prevention

A sight for sore legs

A sight for sore legs

What if I told you you could move around again, easily and gracefully, like you did when you were a child?

Even if you are getting really sore in boot camp.

The secret is called: “foam rolling”. Also known as Self Myofascial Release or SMFR for short.

Let me tell you. Just one session of foam rolling can do so much for you – it’s almost unreal.
It’s like experiencing a brand new color for the very first time.  We get so used to chronic tension we learn to ignore it.  But eventually you won’t be able to ignore it because it basically cripples you.

You know, the hunched back, stiff walk, back pain…

That’s why, once you’ve foam rolled for a month — you’ll never want to be without it.

Just imagine being free of muscle tension and soreness.  Picture moving easily without stiffness.

It’s GREAT!  And here are at least 14 more things it does for you…

Doubles  your flexibility instantly (perfect before a workout)
Dramatically reduces soreness after workouts
Speeds up recovery time from intense muscle work (like Portland Boot Camp)
-  Massages your muscles
Reduces or even eliminates chronic unbalanced tension in the  back, legs, hips and neck
-  Improves posture
-  Targets hard to release areas like your hip flexors and inner thighs
-  Helps eliminate toxins and waste products
-  Improves muscle tone
Frees your body to be more graceful and agile
-  Relieves or eliminates chronic muscle stiffness or pain
-  Maintains your muscles
-  Prevents injury (it facilitates proper length and tension relationship of the muscle prior to working out so
tight muscles won’t pull on joints.  It helps prevent dysfunctional movement patterns that lead to injury!)
-    Wake up without stiffness!

This is not hype.  It really makes a difference in the quality of your life if done regularly.  Especially if you work out often.   And, I can honestly say, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the humble foam roller is, hands down, the most important tool in your arsenal of fitness and health equipment.

OK.  Here’s how it works: When you press against a muscle knot, it causes the muscle to automatically relax.  You can’t help it… iIt’s a muscular reflex everyone has.  This is a very good thing.

Rolling stimulates tiny sensors in the muscles and near tendons.  And if you stimulate the sensors the right way, your muscles automatically relax and loosen.  If you follow the foam rolling with an appropriate warm-up and then stretch, well… then you will feel incredible. So much looser and relaxed.

Once you get the hang of using it, you will never go back.  It just is that good.

In fact, the difference in muscle tension is usually noticeable after the very first time.

They’re cheap and easy to use.  You can roll just about anywhere.  And best of all, the new ones last at least 3 times as long as the old ones did.  The old ones would flatten out in about 4-6 months.  The new ones are specially engineered to hold their shape indeifintely!

So, let me finish by saying, if you are serious about fitness and
do not have one yet, you are doing yourself a grave disservice.

So, here’s how to get your own: You can buy them in Portland for boot camp at FitRightNorthwest There may even be physical therapy or massage stores that carry them.  Or, if you like, you can order below and get the NEW “never flatten” kind at the link below and have it shipped to your door with detailed printed instructions included.

I bought 2 small ones from Perform Better for traveling. One for me and one for my wife. Since they’re only a foot long and half as wide, they fit easily into a suitcase.  Trust me… they are RELIEF after a long day of walking or hiking.

The sooner you get your own, the sooner you feel better, and more relaxed than you can imagine — so go get yours ASAP!

17 Ways to Wake Up for Boot Camp Bursting With Energy!

Attending boot camp sleep deprived is not a good idea

Attending boot camp sleep deprived is not a good idea

It can really be tough.

Waking up early for boot camp.

So, to help you, here are 17 ways to help you wake up feeling refreshed, alive, and BURSTING with energy!

  1. Eat whole, organic foods 90% of the time.
  2. Drink at least 8 glasses of pure water daily.
  3. Take Krill oil daily. (here’s the best brand)
  4. Exercise for 30 minutes to an hour daily.
  5. Foam roll your legs with a foam roller 30 minutes before bed.
  6. Stop watching TV an hour before bed.  Or better yet, skip it.
  7. Stop watching the news and reading the paper.  Go on Timothy Ferriss’ low-information diet
  8. Keep a journal by your bed and dump your worries, plans, and thoughts into it before you shut your eyes.  This will keep your brain from going over the minutia of your day and future.
  9. Read a fiction book while laying in bed just before sleep to clear your mind of the days events.  Or do as one of my clients suggests: read a book on art history. (no offense to art history buffs.)
  10. Go to bed earlier and allow for 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
  11. Make sure your room is cool and TOTALLY dark.  Any light will disturb your sleep cycles.
  12. Take 1mg of melatonin 30 minutes before bed and before reading your fiction book.
  13. Reflect on all the things in your life for which you are deeply grateful.
  14. When you wake up, immediately drink a very big glass of water…before your feet hit the floor.
  15. Rub the soles of both feet for a minute, deeply, before you put them on the floor.  Deep breathe as you do this.
  16. Put your feet on the floor and stretch your arms overhead 5 times as you take huge breaths in…hold them for a second and exhale deeply.
  17. Get moving quickly.

Tell me how it works for you.  Post your comments below.

See you in boot camp!

Cheers,

D

Boot Camp Question: Does this mean you are a fitness failure?

I can’t begin to count how many times I have “failed”.

Even at boot camp.  Yep.  I wrote a dud or two a few years back.

But I learned quickly how to improve and the rest is history.

I’m sure so many others can say the same thing in their lives.

That’s great.  Because I believe failure is actually a good thing.  If you look at it properly.

In my book, failure is big part of success.

Without failure we often cannot move forward.  We often have to discover what does not work to find out what does.

That’s because our brains are servo-mechanisms.  That is, they require a clear target – and then must zig-zag towards the target.  We start by succeeding a little, then failing, correcting course and succeeding a little more, failing a little more, correcting course and succeeding again, and so on until the goal is reached.

It’s a natural process.

Once you fail, you can explore new options and figure out what works perfectly.  So failure is actually a special opportunity to get where we want to go – faster.

This also applies to exercise and attempts to lose weight.

If you have tried to workout and failed,  and if you don’t know where to start, I can help.

Many of the exercises I use in Boot Camp, that burn body fat like no tomorrow, are detailed in Ed Baran’s awesome book called “Body Weight Sculpting Exercises for Women.”

It’s so good, I recently had him on my radio show to talk about why his exercises work so well.

Anyway, if you want to burn fat and get super trim, and you can’t join boot camp right now, then check it out Here. These awesome exercises will cut your time from fat loss failure to fat loss success in half.

Cheers,

Daniel

The Boot Camp Question: Can You?

Ghandi decided he could

Ghandi decided he could

Sometime you just have to cut to the chase.  Like we do every day in Portland Adventure Boot Camp.

So here we go.

One of the most profound statements ever uttered by a divine human:

“If I believe I cannot do something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, then I acquire the ability to do it, even if I did not have the ability in the beginning.”  — Mahatma Gandhi

Please, read that again aloud — slowly. I’ll wait.

Done?

OK. Really think about that for a second.

Short. Sweet. Profound.

Yes, You Can.

Believe it.

Cheers,

D

P.S.  Did your subconscious mind censor you?  Did it step in and say, “No you can’t”?  Don’t listen to it.  It is a broken record from the past.  Not reality.  We do it every day in boot camp for weight loss and fitness results. And you can too.
